Photography Lesson #2 – Silhouette Portraits and 5 Other Type Photographers
Since here in Augusta, Georgia we are on a mandated school shut down and are having the children do distance learning, I thought it would be fun each week to offer photography lessons for them while they are home and have tips for adults too. This week we will learn about Silhouette Portraits using our iPhones and DSLR Cameras.
Below are some useful tips on how to take Silhouette Portraits.
I have also created a hands on You Tube Video to teach you how to create Silhouette Portraits using your iPhone and using your DSLR Camera- https://youtu.be/BJNMlhMKFCo
Tip #1
Shoot towards the sun or a light source. The contrast between the dark subject and light background will create a dramatic portrait. Taking portraits during the sunrise or sunsetting is the best time to take these portraits.
Tip #2
You want to hide the sun BEHIND your subject. Whatever light source you use, it needs to be behind your subject to create these silhouette portraits.
Tip #3
Choose subjects with strong shapes. This way the the subjects will be easy recognizable. Looking at the portrait below that was taken a few summers ago…. You can tell that silhouetted images in this portrait are people ( a family).
Tip #4
Shooting with mostly sky behind your subject is best. To help with this, you can get down low and shoot up towards your subject and get creative.
Tip #5
You can create silhouette portraits indoors too! Just make sure you shoot towards the light coming through windows.
