One of the most common questions I get asked before a Beach Portrait Session is: “What should we wear?”And I totally get it — you want your family to look amazing, feel comfortable, and coordinate without looking too matchy-matchy. (No, you don’t all need to wear white shirts and jeans. I promise.) Let me take the guesswork out of it for you with some simple tips and inspiration with our Beach Portrait Sessions Outfit Guide (links included) to help you plan the perfect look for your beach portraits.

Start With You, Mom. Here’s the thing: if you feel confident and comfortable, it sets the tone for the entire session. So instead of starting with the kids’ outfits or what color your partner likes, start with what makes you feel great. Skip the overly flowy maxi dresses — while they may look dreamy in theory, the wind on the beach can quickly turn them into a fabric frenzy (not fun in real life or in photos!). Instead, opt for something structured but soft, like a midi dress with a bit of movement, or a relaxed jumpsuit in a breathable fabric. Stick with neutral tones, soft pastels, or earthy hues — think sand, sage, ivory, soft blue, or even a pop of rust or blush.

Coordinate, Don’t Clone. Once you’ve picked your outfit, build the rest of the family’s looks around it. You don’t need to match — instead, choose complementary tones and textures. Think of it like designing a room: you want harmony, not uniformity.

At the end of the day, your beach portraits are about connection and love — not perfection. So choose outfits that reflect you. Feel good in your skin. All while letting the sea breeze (and my camera!) do the rest.
