Spring is almost here and it’s a very popular season for a family portrait session. The flowers are blooming, the temperatures are warming up and it’s a great time to book that portrait session you’ve been thinking about. And if you’re procrastinating and still haven’t booked your session for the spring, our Peach Tree Limited Edition Sessions have sold out for Saturday, but we have a few spots open for Sunday, book here. After booking your session, usually the next step is to pick out what you’ll wear. I have so much fun putting outfits together for clients and love when they ask my input. This year we’ve searched and found a few options we love for your family session!
The basics of portrait styling always apply, even in the spring. I have a blog post in the fall on some styling tips for portrait sessions here. Basically, there a few rules to follow when choosing outfits for your family. First, choose your (mom’s) outfit first. Happy mom equals good portraits! Second, pick a color palette, I recommend 2-3 colors and mix them with neutrals. Thirdly, with kids involved, schedule your timing wisely. You know when you have the best chance of having kids in a good mood. Go with that! Finally, choose comfortable clothes, especially for the kids, and know your family’s style. Don’t stray too far from that so everyone can feel like themselves and not like they are posing for a magazine cover. And always remember to have some fun!
The first board is for the mommy and me matching outfits. This floral print is perfect for spring and how cute is it to match your little girl? And let’s be honest, she won’t think it’s cute in a few years so do it now and get some beautiful portraits! The neutral palette for the boys will really compliment the dress and a bow tie for your little mister ties it all together! These outfits are easily ordered; dresses from Amazon, Old Navy for dad and Janie and Jack for your little boy.
This board is calling all you simple stylish families who like to be comfortable. The neutrals would especially pop against a beautiful spring backdrop, like our upcoming Peach Tree Limited Edition Sessions. No one would complain about being uncomfortable and everyone would look effortlessly stylish. And while I love a mom in a dress, pants with a beautiful blouse can be easier to navigate when wrangling little kids. Check out Old Navy for mom and dad’s outfit, Janie and Jack for brother and big sister and finally, Amazon for little sister’s white dress.
Can you tell we’re in love with mommy and me matching outfits? Here’s another combo in another beautiful print. We switched up the color palette with this one and this romper might be the cutest thing I’ve seen for spring yet! These colors would be another great option for a spring back drop. These mommy and me matching dresses are Amazon, dad and big brother looking dapper in Old Navy and baby sister stealing the show with this romper from Janie and Jack.
If you haven’t noticed yet, a floral print is a great idea for spring. Always on trend, you can pull colors from them for other members of the family and you can find them in almost every style to fit any body type! This V-neck wrap dress pairs beautifully with with white dress for big sister, both from Old Navy. Dad is also in Old Navy and the dress will pop against his neutrals. Little sister is in a beautiful pink dress (that bow is everything) while brother is also sporting neutrals, both from Janie and Jack.
Putting outfits together for whole family can seem daunting, exhausting and down right impossible. I hope these boards give you some inspiration for your upcoming session! Remember, the outfits are important, but your family being in good spirits and genuinely enjoying themselves will make for the best portraits. So enjoy yourselves! ❤️
