Some of my favorite moments happen when families simply slow down, enjoy one another, and let their personalities shine. Before your next session, here are ten things I wish every family knew. Here’s everything I want my clients to know before a family portrait session for a stress-free and memorable experience.
1. Your Kids Don’t Have to Be Perfect
One of the first things parents do during a session is apologize for their children. Please don’t! Kids are naturally curious, energetic, and sometimes a little unpredictable. That’s exactly how they’re supposed to be. Whether your little one wants to explore, needs a snack break, or takes a few minutes to warm up, we’ll work with it. Some of the sweetest images come from those genuine, unscripted moments.
2. The Best Smiles Are the Ones You Didn’t Plan
The biggest smiles rarely happen because someone said, “Say cheese.” Instead, they happen during tickle fights, whispered jokes, hugs, silly games, and moments when your family is simply enjoying each other. Rather than focusing on getting everyone to smile perfectly at the camera, focus on connecting with one another. Those authentic moments are the ones you’ll treasure most. 3. Not Every Portrait Needs Everyone Looking at the Camera
Of course, we’ll capture those classic family portraits, but some of the most meaningful images happen when you’re looking at each other instead. Holding hands, walking together, cuddling your little ones, or laughing at something funny often creates the portraits families end up loving the most. Those moments tell your story in a way a perfectly posed photo never could.
4. You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
One of the most common things I hear is, “We’re so awkward in portraits.” Don’t worry, that’s my job! I’ll guide you every step of the way, from where to stand to what to do with your hands. I’ll give prompts that help your family interact naturally so your portraits feel relaxed and genuine. You don’t have to come prepared with poses. Just come ready to enjoy time with the people you love.
5. It’s Okay If the Session Feels a Little Chaotic
Parents often leave a session saying, “I can’t believe you got anything!” Meanwhile, I’m already excited because I know we captured beautiful moments. Kids may run, wiggle, or get distracted, and that’s completely normal. Sessions often feel much busier to parents than they actually look in the final gallery. Trust the process. Sometimes the moments that feel the most chaotic turn into the most cherished photographs.
6. Coordinating Outfits Is Better Than Matching
Gone are the days of matching outfits. Choosing outfits that complement one another with soft colors, textures, and a cohesive color palette creates timeless images that keep the focus on your family. Comfort matters too. 7. The Small Moments Often Become Your Favorites
When families imagine their gallery, they usually picture the perfectly posed portrait. But time and time again, the images they fall in love with are the little in-between moments.
- A forehead kiss.
- Tiny hands wrapped around yours.
- A child giggling in your arms.
- The way your family naturally laughs together
Those quiet, genuine interactions are what make your gallery feel personal.
8. Imperfections are Welcome
- Years from now, it won’t be perfection that brings back memories. It will be the little things that make this season of life uniquely yours.
- The gap-toothed grin before adult teeth come in
- The curls that never seem to stay brushed.
- The way your toddler insists on bringing their favorite stuffed animal everywhere.
- Bare feet after running through the grass.
- Freckles that appear every summer.
- The way your daughter twirls her dress.
- The way your son reaches for Dad’s hand without even thinking.
These aren’t things to fix or hide. They’re the little details that make up who you are as a family right now. One day, they’ll be the moments you miss the most. My goal is to preserve them exactly as they are, because those are the memories that become priceless.
9. Your Kids Will Follow Your Lead
- Children are incredibly good at picking up on your emotions.
- If you’re stressed about getting the perfect picture, they’ll often feel that pressure too. But when you relax, laugh, and simply enjoy the experience, they’re much more likely to do the same.
- The best thing you can bring to your session isn’t perfection—it’s a willingness to be present with your family.
10. These Portraits Are About More Than Today
Right now, you’re probably thinking about getting everyone dressed and making it through the session. But years from now, these portraits will mean so much more.
They’ll remind you of tiny voices, little hands, missing teeth, bedtime cuddles, and a season of life that passed far too quickly. Your children won’t remember whether everything went perfectly that day. They’ll remember being loved. And someday, these photographs will help tell that story.❤️
