If there’s one question I get asked more than any other, it’s this: “When should we actually book our newborn portrait session?”

The answer surprises many parents: you should book your newborn portrait session before your baby even arrives, ideally during your second trimester, with your session set for about one week after your due date. I know that sounds early. But there’s a good reason for it, and once I walk you through it, I promise it’ll make total sense.

Why One Week After Your Due Date Is the Ideal Newborn Session Timing

Newborn photography is all about capturing that brand-new, still-curled-up, sleepy-squishy stage, one that only lasts for a handful of days. Babies change fast. By two weeks old, they’re already losing that newborn curl, their skin is changing, and they’re becoming more alert and harder to pose comfortably.

Booking for one week after your due date gives us the best shot at photographing your baby in that sweet spot, while also building in a little buffer. Here’s why that buffer matters:

  • Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date. Many come a few days early or late, so scheduling around the due date (rather than the birth date) keeps us close to the ideal newborn portrait window, no matter how the baby decides to make their entrance.
  • It gives you and the baby time to settle in. Those first few days home are a blur of feedings, visitors, and recovery. Having a session already reserved means you’re not scrambling to schedule anything during that tender time  and it’s simply already on the calendar.
  • It protects your spot on my calendar. Because newborn sessions have such a short window, I only take a limited number of clients each month. Booking early guarantees your spot is held, rather than trying to squeeze one in at the last minute once baby arrives.

Once your little one makes their debut, we’ll simply confirm the exact date together (usually within that same week), so everything stays flexible around baby’s actual arrival — even though the initial hold happens months in advance.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session, So You Can Just Be Worry-Free

Here’s the good news: once your session is booked, your job is simple. Let me handle the details so you can just enjoy those first days with your baby. Here’s how to set yourselves up for a completely stress-free experience.

1. Book Early, Then Forget About It

Seriously, this is the biggest gift you can give yourselves. Once it’s on the calendar, you don’t have to think about timing, logistics, or “did we wait too long?” It’s done. Cross it off your mental list.

2. Keep Baby’s Sleep Schedule Loose Beforehand

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare the baby, no special routines, no need to keep them awake or sleepy beforehand. Newborns are naturally sleepy in those first couple of weeks, which works perfectly in our favor.

3. Feed Baby Right Before We Start

A full, sleepy baby is a cooperative baby. Plan to feed the baby right before the session begins (or right as we arrive, for an in-home session). I always build in time for feeding breaks throughout, too. So there’s no rush! ❤️

4. Keep the House Cozy and Warm

Newborns are most comfortable and sleep more soundly for portraits in a warm room. I’ll always let you know the ideal temperature in advance so your home is ready.

5. Don’t Stress About Cleaning or “Getting Ready”

If we’re doing an in-home session, please don’t feel like you need to deep-clean or stage your house. I photograph in a way that keeps the focus on you and baby, not the background. A lived-in, cozy home tells your story beautifully just as it is.

6. Trust the Process

You don’t need props, outfits figured out, or a Pinterest board of poses (unless you want one, on which I’m always happy to collaborate!). I’ll guide you through everything, from what to wear to how to hold baby, every step of the way.

7. Let Go of the “Perfect” Timeline

Life with a newborn rarely goes according to plan, and that’s more than okay. If the baby has a fussy morning or we need to shift the start time by an hour, we adapt. Flexibility is built into how I work because I know these days are unpredictable, and that’s part of the magic, too.

The Bottom Line

Booking your newborn session early isn’t about rigid planning; it’s about giving yourselves permission to be fully present when baby arrives, instead of juggling logistics. When you book ahead and trust the process, all that’s left for you to do is soak in those first precious days, knowing everything else is already taken care of.

Ready to reserve your newborn portrait session? I’d love to chat about your due date and get you on the calendar. Click here to book, and I cannot wait to hear from you! ❤️
