My Favorite Newborn Photography Trends Right Now

Newborn photography has changed so much over the years, and I have to say, I’m loving where things are headed.

While I will always love a timeless, beautifully posed newborn portrait, I’m seeing more families embrace photographs that feel personal, meaningful, and true to them. There’s less pressure for everything to look perfectly curated and more room for personality, color, storytelling, and the little details that make each family unique.

As a newborn photographer, these are a few of my favorite newborn photography trends right now.

1. Heirlooms Are Coming Back

One trend I am especially excited to see making its way back into newborn photography is the use of heirlooms.

There is something so special about incorporating an item that has already been part of your family’s story. Maybe it’s a handmade quilt from Grandma, a vintage baby outfit that Mom or Dad wore as a newborn, a favorite childhood stuffed animal, or another treasured family keepsake.

These details aren’t just pretty. They have a story behind them.

Years from now, that photograph becomes more than a beautiful picture of your baby. It becomes a reminder of where they came from and the people who loved them before they were even born.

And that is exactly what I want newborn photography to be about.

2. Color Is Coming Back

For a while, newborn photography seemed to lean heavily toward soft whites, creams, and neutral tones. While I still love a beautiful neutral setup, I am so excited to see color coming back.

Parents are getting more creative with colored sets, outfits, florals, themes, and even nursery-inspired setups.

And I love that color gives families another way to show their personality.

Maybe you love soft blue. Maybe your nursery is full of sage green. Maybe you want a warm, earthy color palette or something a little more playful. There is no reason every newborn session has to look exactly the same.

A little color can make an image feel completely unique to your family.

3. The Beauty of the Imperfect Portrait

One of my favorite shifts in photography is the move toward authenticity over perfection.

Not every photograph needs to be a perfectly posed baby with their eyes closed and their hands positioned just right.

Sometimes the best photograph is the one where the baby lets out a giant yawn.

Or they’re making a funny little face.

Or their tiny fingers are wrapped around Mom’s hand.

Or they’re wide awake and looking straight at the camera.

Or maybe they’re crying, and Dad is trying to soothe them.

Those moments are real.

And newborns are only this tiny for such a short amount of time. I want to preserve the little things that parents might not realize they’ll miss someday, the scrunched up faces, tiny stretches, sleepy smiles, and all those wonderfully imperfect newborn moments.

4. Give Me the Setup That Means Something to You

This might be one of my favorite trends of all.

I love seeing families move away from choosing a setup simply because it’s popular or because they saw it on Pinterest.

Instead, let’s create something that actually means something to you.

Maybe Dad loves baseball, and you want to incorporate that into one of baby’s portraits. Maybe Mom loves flowers. Maybe there is a favorite children’s book you can’t wait to read together. Maybe your family loves the outdoors, traveling, music, or a particular tradition.

Those are the things that make your family your family.

I would much rather photograph a setup that tells me something about you than recreate the exact same setup I’ve seen a hundred times before.

Trends are fun, but meaning never goes out of style.

5. A Little Nostalgia

There is also something really beautiful about the return of a more nostalgic feeling in photography.

Think warm tones, film-inspired editing, subtle grain, vintage details, and photographs that feel like they could have been pulled from an old family album.

I love this because newborn photographs aren’t just for today.

These are the photographs your children may look back on decades from now. The photographs that might eventually sit in an album alongside pictures of their grandparents and great-grandparents.

There is something about giving newborn photography that timeless, nostalgic feeling that makes it feel even more like an heirloom itself.

6. More of the Story at Home

Another trend I am loving is bringing more of the family’s actual home and everyday environment into newborn photography.

Instead of photographing baby only in a studio setup, lifestyle images can capture the nursery, the crib, Mom and Dad cuddling baby on the couch, reading a book together, or simply enjoying those quiet moments at home.

Because someday, you’ll probably remember how tiny your baby was, but you may also want to remember what their nursery looked like, the little details you picked out, and what it felt like to bring them home.

Those details are part of their story, too.

7. Personality Over Trends

If there is one thing I hope families take away from all of these newborn photography trends, it is this:

Your newborn session does not have to look like anyone else’s.

You don’t have to choose the most popular color. You don’t need the trendiest prop. You don’t have to recreate a photograph you saw online.

Your session should feel like your family.

If you love neutrals, let’s embrace the neutrals. If you love color, let’s have fun with color. If you have a family heirloom you’ve been waiting to use, bring it. If there is something completely unexpected that tells your family’s story, I want to hear about it.

Because trends will come and go.

But your family’s story is something you’ll want to remember forever.

At the end of the day, I think the best thing happening in newborn photography right now is that families are being encouraged to make their photographs more personal.

I’m all for beautiful photographs, but I think the most beautiful photographs are the ones that mean something.
