October has a way of making everything feel a little more special.

The mornings are cooler, the leaves are beginning to change, pumpkin patches are calling, and suddenly the calendar fills up with all those little traditions we look

forward to every year. It is one of my favorite times to slow down, get outside with the kids, and enjoy the simple things that make this season feel like fall.

So instead of another list of things you have to do this October, here is my little October list of things to make, bake, do, and remember.

Make Something Together

You do not need a Pinterest-perfect craft table to make a fall memory.

Gather some leaves from the backyard and turn them into simple leaf rubbings. Paint little pumpkins. Make paper chains in warm fall colors. Let the kids create their

own pumpkin faces using construction paper and glue.

And honestly, let them make a mess.

The crooked pumpkins and glue-covered fingers are part of the memory too.

Have a Cozy Fall Afternoon

Pick one afternoon with nowhere to be.

Make apple cider, put on a favorite movie, bake something together, and let the kids stay in their pajamas a little longer than usual.

One of my favorite things about this season is that not every memory has to be a big outing. Sometimes the moments we remember most happen right in our own homes.

Start a New Little Tradition

Maybe this is the year you start something new.

A Saturday morning trip to the pumpkin patch. Homemade cinnamon rolls on the first really chilly morning. Letting the kids pick out a Halloween book every October. A family walk after dinner to look at all the decorations.

It does not have to be complicated. The best traditions are often the ones that are easy enough to repeat year after year.

And before you know it, your children will know exactly what October means in your family.

Get Outside While the Weather Is Perfect

This is the season for exploring.

Take a walk, visit a local farm, head to the pumpkin patch, have a picnic, or simply let the kids run around in the backyard while the weather is comfortable.

Bring your camera if you want, but do not feel like every moment needs to be perfectly documented. Sometimes it is nice to put the phone down and just be there.

And then, every once in a while, capture the way your little one looks right now.

Because they will not always be this little.

Make Something Delicious

October is also the perfect excuse to spend a little more time in the kitchen.

Apple muffins, pumpkin bread, cinnamon rolls, caramel apples, homemade soup… There is something about fall recipes that makes an ordinary afternoon feel like a

tradition.

If you are looking for something new to try this season, I have a few favorite fall recipes over on Home in the Kitchen.

And Yes… It Is Time to Start Thinking About Christmas

I know. It is only October.

But if you have been around here for a while, you already know that this is when things start getting a little magical behind the scenes.

Santa Sessions are coming, holiday calendars are filling, and it will be here before we know it.

If you have been thinking about creating a few beautiful holiday portraits for your family, now is the time to start planning. The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us,

and I would much rather have you feeling prepared than wondering where the time went.

Fall Portraits Are About More Than Fall

The beautiful thing about photographing families in the fall is that we are not really photographing pumpkins, leaves, or sweaters.

We are photographing this version of your family.

The way your toddler still reaches for your hand. The way your children laugh when they are together. The little personalities that change so quickly. The way you look at

each other when you think no one is watching.

Those are the things you will want to remember long after the leaves are gone.

So this October, make the craft. Bake the cookies. Go to the pumpkin patch. Let the kids get dirty. Start a new tradition.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, remember to pause.

These ordinary little days become your family’s story.

Happy October, friends. I hope this season gives you plenty of reasons to slow down, get cozy, and make a few memories worth keeping.
