How important is a yearly family portrait session? It doesn’t matter if you update your Instagram account profile or send out the perfectly curated Christmas card (although they are my most favorite pieces of mail of the year). But family portraits are not just for show. They mean more than you know to the most important people in your life.

Family portraits have a huge impact on your children’s self esteem, where they see themselves fit into the world and your family unit. In fact, a Tulane University study found that children who see photos of themselves have higher self-esteem than children who aren’t exposed to family portraits. Having your family photos hanging up in your home can help your children grow into more confident adults.

Our homes are a reflection of everything we love. We bring things into our home that spark joy and display only our most cherished items. Displaying family portraits make your children feel loved, feel safe and feel that they are an important part of your family.

Family portraits are also a greaty way to strengthen your family bond. It demonstrates that you are a family unit and will alwauys be there for eachother. More practically, family portraits in your home show your children who they are, where they come from and how they can take their place in the great circle of life (ok, that last part I stole from The Lion King, what a great movie!). It helps them, from a young age, move confidently through their life.

Most young families, in this generation, are all about the digital prints. All about the digital everything really. And while digital prints are wonderful and most certainly serve a purpose, they don’t share the same value to your children. Your children don’t follow you on Instagram or read the captions of how much you love them. A physical family portrait hanging in your home lets your children know how much they are loved and valued. It’s a statement that you are proud of your family, your children and cherish all the memories you’re making together.

Family portrait sessions aren’t just for updating your social media profile or for that perfectly curated Christmas card (but if you do, please add me to your address book). It’s a way to make another memory of the ones you love most. The ones you walk through this life with on a daily basis. It’s a way to show your children just how precious they are to you. If you’re ready to book your family session, contact Mary Beth’s Photography. Family portraits sessions are always fun and exciting with lots of laughs. So don’t miss out this year!
